Shelter and Settlements (S&S) programming is a critical area of programming for KKB, with the ability to mobilize quickly during emergencies, KKB interventions make a significant impact in saving lives and achieving or restoring adequate housing for vulnerable populations.
As an operational organization in the S&S sector operating across diverse contexts KKB supports people affected by disasters, conflicts, and complex crises, and is a key partner in coordination mechanisms at national, regional, and global levels, including in internal displacement.
Throughout 2022, KKB reached 1.2 million crisis-affected individuals across 9 countries including in response to major emergencies in Malaysia, Afghanistan, Northern Syria, Pakistan, Lebanon, and Palestine..
These temporary houses are commonly called shacks. People use materials that they find in scrap yards and what they can afford to buy. Some examples are: cardboard, plastic sheeting, wooden planks, old tyres, pieces of polystyrene foam and sheets of corrugated iron.
Need for healthcare: a lot of refugees are tired and sometimes distressed when they arrive. They may also be ill due to the unhealthy conditions experienced during their journey. Welfare needs in terms both of protection and a warm meal, a bed, access to a bathroom, new clothes, rest etc.
Resettlement is a life-saving solution for the most vulnerable refugees in the world. Refugees who are resettled go to another country that has agreed to admit them and ultimately grant them permanent residence.
“Returnee” is the term used by the international community to identify a person who was a refugee, but who has recently returned to his/her country of origin.
